Rapid Diagnosis of Brain Tumors by Onco-Metabolic Detection Using Miniature Mass Spectrometry

  • The diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors have long been challenging due to unique structure and function. Metabolic reprogramming brings the chances for rapid MS diagnosis of brain tumors.
  • The combination of ambient direct ionization and mini-MS broke the barriers of complex pretreatment and high cost of MS, enabling point-of-care MS analysis.

In 2024, PNAS published Rapid detection of lDH mutations in gliomas by intraoperative mass spectrometry, which suggest that MS could be used to identify lDH-mut tissue margins at locations of interest selected by the surgeon intraoperatively and rapidly within 2 min. The article also demonstrated that this molecular measurement should assist the surgeon in achieving optimal surgical resection of infiltrated tissue in those cases where the tumor core is lDH-mutant positive.

Course Design of Mass Spectrometry Experiments for High School and University

  • Mass spectrometry has been widely used in industry and scientific research due to its significant advantages in sensitivity, specificity and multi-parameter detection. However, it is difficult to obtain on-site experience, especially in tuning and building instruments, due to the high costs of instrument procurement, operation and training.
